Big Chock is a veteran to the Camden rap scene. He first came on the scene in the mid 90’s and was a fast rising star in the streets of South Jersey. His burgeoning career was sidetracked by street beef and legal woes but now he is back to reclaim his throne. After 10 years Sneaker Box Chock is better than ever and with the Screwface army behind him definitely a force to be reckoned with. With crisp bars and a super-fly sense of style Chocky is sure to leave a serious impression on the game!
Musical Influences:
Hip-Hop it self is my influence. I love a lot of emcees, past & present. Anybody who knows me, know that I am a big Joe Budden fan. Ghost Face is also another nigga that I keep in rotation. And, of course everyone in the Screwface family. I listen to a lot of slow shit as well. Donny Hathaway, Prince, Musiq SoulChild. Shit like that. I am just inspired by any form of good quality music.
Favorite Song Written By You:
I would have to say ‘Crying’. It is not necessarily my favorite but the most emotional song that I have recorded. It captures my life at 3 different ages & speaks on the ups & downs during those said ages.
Favorite Song Written By Artist Other Than You:
A song titled ‘Love you more than you’ll ever know’ by Donny Hathaway. In that song you can just hear his pain & discomfort with life. And, when I was introduced to that song I shared some similar hurts. I have too many favorite hip-hop songs to narrow it down to 1. Shit, I don’t even think I can narrow it down to 3.
Favorite Album Of All Time:
WOW!!! That’s a tough question. Since I am from the old school era of hip-hop, it’s so many albums that have carried me thru certain situations. Right off the top, I would say it’s a toss up between…Criminal minded, It was written, Mood Muzik 1,2 & 3 or Hov’s Volume 2.
Other Talents:
I’m a nigga who been thru a lot & had to adopt a whole lot of certain skills. So, I can do just about anything except home repair & fixing a fucking car. (laughs)
How Did You Choose Your Name?
Actually, Chocky is a nickname given to me by my family when I was 3 years old. And, no one ever really called me my government, so I grew up as Chocky. That name became popular with shit I did in my youth & I just always wanted to go by that since Chocky is who I am. If that makes any sense to you. Big Chock just came about, cause overall I have a big conceit about myself. A nigga just has a high confidence level. So, Big Chock was perfect. Sneaker Box came as an attachment with my sneaker fetish. And, Armani Chocky is an attachment of me wearing so much Armani Exchange shit.
How Would You Define Your Style?
Fun!!! My style is me inside & out. If I’m stressed I wirte about it. If I’m feeling GQish that day I write about it. I always keep my rhymes within the realms of myself. I don’t have a Bentley or a Benz, so you’ll never hear me rapping about that shi, that is until I fucking get one. I rhyme about Chocky. My past & present experiences.
How Did You Get Down With Screwface?
I met niggaz (The Screwface Family) in 2006 when I was introduced to them by Kodak, when I was looking for a studio to record my mixtape (Minority Report). I quickly befriended the whole Screwface family, cuz niggaz was just super fucking cool. After 2 years of being around them & working on music, our love for hip-hop bonded us & the rest is history.
What Would You Like To Be Doing In 10 Years?
Everything & more than what I can imagine as a possibility. Niggaz in the music business is doing it big right now. I want to surpass all expectations & have myself & Screwface household names.
What Do You Think About The State of the Industry?
I have mixed thoughts on that. It is definitely not in its purest form as it was when I was in my mid teens . But, it has evolved & became it’s own baby. But, to answer your question. Overall, I think it drinks skunk piss! So, much bubble gum shit. What happened to lyrics being important? What happened to the love of Djing, break dancing, graffiti? All that is pretty much out the window. It’s all bout a catchy hook now, which is cool. Everything changes at some point or another.
Why Should People Buy Your Album?
To hear real shit. We as people try to escape when we have problems & that causes us to stress more. I don’t hide that. I actually use my music to vent. I use my music to explain how I see life. I don’t use it as a tool to lie to the masses about dumb shit.
I Heard Your Sneaker Game Is Crazy, Tell Me About That?
Oh Yeah, no doubt! Sneaker Box Chock is here!!! My closet is looking like Foot Lockers back stock room. I just love the look of new crispy sneaks. I wear a size 9, so jawns just be looking proper on my feet, fresh out the box with an outfit that cost more than some peoples car payment. (Smiles)
How Did Being From Camden Influence You As An Artist?
I am my past. So, just growing up in that environment molded me in so many ways. As a result, it carries over in my music cause my music is me.
